Zack Arias...One Light Workshop

Sunday, April 30, 2006

I just got back from the One Light Workshop put on by UsedFilm.com's Zack Arias. I am a huge fan of Zack's work and his work ethic so I was really excited to be able to take part in this workshop.

Zack just moved into his new studio space in Atlanta. Not only is the studio awesome but the grounds around it are full of unique locations for his style of portrait work.

Here are a few images that we created of his make-up artist Sarah. If you want to get technical...I pressed the button that created these images...BUT Zack set them up...and lit them...so I should really give the credit where it is due.

I cheated a litte bit on the last image. While Zack was shooting Sarah with his strobe to my left...I was shooting available light from a security flood light that was positioned over my head. The light had two bulbs in it...but I'm going to say it still passes as "One Light".

I would recommend this workshop to anyone who is interested in making great images without dropping huge amounts of money on equipment. Take a look at Zack's website...he created a ton of the images on his page with one light. I'll borrow his quote..."It's not about the gear. It never has been."

A musician

Sunday, April 23, 2006

I was recently approached by Heather Partain, a local makeup artist, who wanted to do some work with local musician Kevin Caudle. We shot the photos today at Gullion Farms in Somerville, AL. It has been a long time since I have shot at a place that had this many options. Most of the time I am taking a not-so-photogenic scenes and trying to make a great photo out of it....but today I had many image-ready scenes...all I had to do was add Kevin.

By the way...Heather warned me ahead-of-time about aggressive turkeys on this farm. It's pretty safe to say that this is the first time in my entire life I have ever been warned about aggressive turkeys.

The Staircase

Wednesday, April 12, 2006

I met up with a friend of mine, Heather, a month or two ago and went downtown to shoot at a couple of spots. She has one of the most infectious smiles that I have ever seen.

There is an old staircase that is at street level on 2nd Avenue in Decatur. I have shot in it a few times over the years...I still have no idea what's behind the door at the top....how's that for a random thought that has nothing to do with the image!?

Anyway...this is one of my favorite shots from that evening. It doesn't look like it....but she was absolutely freezing.

We also managed to squeeze in a quick shot of her and her little boy Gage. They are quite the photogenic pair. This photo is a good example of something I try to explain to my subjects all the time. People are always worried about the background. "I don't think this makes a good background" or "Don't you think this pretty bush would make a great background?" I always tell them that sometimes the background really doesn't matter much. Yes...often it does...but not always. This was a quick setup at a friend's house. We were in the corner of the kitchen. Nothing fancy...no seamless paper...no pretty bush....nothing. My point is this...the background does have the potential to make or break an image...but if you do it right...the people in the photo can make everyone forget about the background. Just like the photo below.

The pace of my new blog posting has been pretty slow... but I promise I'll do my best to speed it up a little.

A senior from the past....

Thursday, April 06, 2006

This is a photo from a senior portrait session that happened a couple of years ago. Alyson and I went down to the Old State Bank building in Decatur and took advantage of some colorful foliage.

Every city and community has them...the locations that have become cliche for every photographer in town to shoot there for portraits. This area has become one of those cliches. Sometimes though it's nice to go to these places and work extra hard to come up with something that is unique and fresh...even though the location has been shot to death. I was pretty happy with the results.

It's brand new!

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

A little over a year ago I started a blog. My intentions were to make it about my photography...well I got distracted. It turned out to be a fun outlet for me...but it rarely has anything to do with my work. So I have created David Higginbotham Photography, the blog. I plan on showcasing my recent work and some older stuff. If you are looking for "Dave's Blog" you can click on the link on the right. It is still very much active and you can expect to find as many goofy insights into my head as ever. This site will prove to you that I am good at what I do and that I am a professional....that site will teach you that I know how to have fun and that I never take myself too seriously!

Enjoy the new site and please feel free to leave me comments and feedback!!
